How to choose the right dog house
Every dog needs their own space where they can feel secure and safe. When your dog needs to sleep outside, he needs a comfy den which will be warm and cozy in the winter, cool and comfortable in the summer, and have his own smells and cherished things to provide a feeling of security. there are even dog houses that can be placed indoors for smaller pets.
Lets consider some of the important points we need to consider when choosing a dog house:
Dogs like a feeling of security, they like to curl up in a warm and snug environment with their own smells. your dog house should be long enough for them to lie down stretched out. They should be able to turn around comfortably. Having a dog house much larger makes it hard to maintain a comfortable temperature in colder weather. Here is how to determine the size you need for your dog:
- Length & Width
- to determine the length and width of your dog house, measure your pet from the tip of his nose to the base of his tail. The length and width should be no more that 25% greater than this measurement
- Door Height
- The height of the door should be at least 3/4 of your dogs shoulder height
- Height
- then height of your dog house should be 4 to 6 inches more than his shoulder height
Dog houses can be made of wood, plastic , or metals.
Wood dog houses are perhaps the best choice for outside dog houses . Dogs are less prone to chew wooden dog houses. Dog houses made from wood are better insulated than metal or plastic houses affording your pet more comfort. all of our Merry Products dog houses are made from wood.
Plastic dog houses are easier to clean and will not rot. Plastic houses are lighter and easier to move, they will not harbor parasites. Plastic dog houses are not good for dogs that are heavy chewers as they will soon destroy the house.
Metal dog houses are typically used in the construction of dog boxes. They are not well insulated and tend toward the expensive side, but they will outlast a dog house made from other materials.
